Crawl Space Insulation Cost Calculator: DIY vs Hiring a Pro

Updated · See the full crawl space insulation cost comparison

  • Measure the foundation footprint (length × width) and pick the closest size tier; it applies to both tabs.
  • Materials are most of the cost either way, so DIY savings are smaller here than for labor-heavy jobs — usually $800–$1,500.
  • On the Hire a pro tab, the add-ons are the real decision: old insulation removal, a floor vapor barrier, rim joist sealing, or full encapsulation.
  • Value your time honestly: this is 10–20 hours on your back in the dirt.

Reading the result

Do it yourself totals materials for your size tier plus whatever protective gear you don’t already own, plus disposal if there’s old insulation to bag, plus a permit if you tick it. Then your time at the rate you set.

Hire a pro starts from a low, typical or high installed price for batts on the same square footage, then lets you add the items that turn a basic quote into a real one: removing old insulation, a 6-mil vapor barrier on the floor, rim joist air sealing, mold remediation if it’s found, or full encapsulation with a sealed liner and dehumidifier. Encapsulation alone can triple the total, which is exactly why it’s worth seeing next to the DIY figure.

What neither tab includes: fixing drainage or standing water first. A wet crawl space isn’t an insulation job yet — see the full comparison for how to tell.

Frequently asked questions

What does this calculator assume about the insulation method?

Both tabs price fiberglass batts between the floor joists — the realistic DIY method and the baseline pro job. The DIY side adds support wires and a 6-mil vapor barrier as materials. On the Hire a pro tab, a vapor barrier, rim joist sealing, spray foam and full encapsulation are add-ons you can tick, since contractors quote them as separate line items.

Why are the DIY savings smaller than for other services?

Because insulation is a materials-heavy job. Batts for a 1,200 sq ft crawl space cost about $1,000 whether you or a pro buy them, so the only thing you're saving is the installer's labor — roughly $1–$1.50 per square foot. Compare that with tree removal, where labor and equipment are nearly the entire price.

What do the quote levels mean for insulation?

Low is a clean, dry crawl space with 3 ft of headroom and a proper access door. Typical is the national median for the square footage. High is tight clearance under 18 inches, ducts and pipes blocking the joist bays, or a job that has to be done in summer heat. Moisture problems aren't a quote level — they're a separate project, and the calculator doesn't price them.
