How to Insulate a Crawl Space Yourself: Batts and Vapor Barrier

  • Do the moisture inspection before buying anything. Wet, moldy or pest-damaged crawl spaces are a different project and a pro one.
  • Lay the vapor barrier and seal the rim joist before the batts go in. They matter as much as the insulation itself.
  • Use unfaced batts, or faced with the paper toward the floor above — never facing down. Hold them up with support wires, not staples through the facing.
  • P100 respirator, goggles, coveralls, headlamp. Plan two full days for 1,200 sq ft, and don't work alone.

Before you start: is this a DIY crawl space?

The work in this guide is straightforward. Whether it should be done is the real question, and it’s answered by an inspection, not by ambition.

Get under the house with a bright light and look at everything. You’re checking for water — on the floor, on the walls, in the old insulation — and for anything alive. A dry crawl space with clean framing and at least a couple of feet of headroom is a DIY job. A damp one, or one with mold, a rodent problem, or termite damage, is not: insulating it makes the underlying problem worse and harder to see. And if the house was built before 1980, treat any old pipe wrap or duct tape as possible asbestos and leave it alone.

Also decide which insulation job you’re doing. This guide covers the traditional approach: batts between the floor joists in a vented crawl space. If you’re in a humid climate or want the crawl space brought inside the thermal envelope, that’s wall insulation with sealed vents — usually with encapsulation — and it’s a pro job.

What you’ll need

Materials for a 1,200 sq ft crawl space with 16-inch joist spacing: about 1,200 sq ft of unfaced fiberglass batts at the right R-value (R-19 to R-30 depending on climate and joist depth), roughly 100 insulation support wires, a 1,500 sq ft roll of 6-mil polyethylene, seam tape, a tube of caulk and a few cans of spray foam. Protective gear is the part people skimp on and shouldn’t. A P100 respirator (not a dust mask), sealed goggles, coveralls, gloves, knee pads, and a headlamp so both hands are free. Fiberglass in the eyes or lungs is unpleasant; crawl space dust can carry worse.

Time and help

Two people make this go twice as fast and much safer — one cutting batts at the access, one installing. Budget 10–20 hours for a medium crawl space, spread over a weekend. Nobody enjoys this job. Pace it.

Step by step

  1. Inspect for moisture, pests and old insulation

    With a good light, check the whole space: standing water or damp soil, white mineral deposits or dark staining on the walls, musty smell, sagging or discolored old insulation, rodent droppings, termite tubes. Any of those means stop — fix the cause first, and involve a pro if there's mold or the house is old enough for asbestos pipe wrap. Only a dry, clean space continues to step 2.

  2. Measure and buy materials

    Measure the foundation footprint for square footage, joist spacing (16 or 24 in on center), and joist depth (2×8 or 2×10) to pick batt width and thickness. Buy unfaced batts at the R-value for your climate, support wires (one per 12–16 in of bay), 6-mil poly for the floor plus 20% for overlap, seam tape, caulk and two or three cans of spray foam.

  3. Gear up and set up

    P100 or N95 respirator, sealed goggles, disposable coveralls, gloves, knee pads, and a headlamp plus a work light. Lay scrap plywood or a mechanic's creeper to move on. Tell someone you're down there and keep a phone on you. Work in cool weather if you can; a crawl space in July is brutal.

  4. Remove old insulation if it's damaged

    Bag damp, sagging, or rodent-soiled batts in contractor bags and seal them; most transfer stations accept fiberglass as household waste for $50–$250. If the old insulation is dry, clean and reasonably intact, you can leave it and add to it, but check that it isn't hiding moisture staining on the joists.

  5. Lay the vapor barrier

    Roll 6-mil poly over every square foot of exposed dirt, overlapping seams by 12 inches and taping them. Run it 6–12 inches up the walls and secure it with tape or mechanical fasteners. Cut around piers and tape the cutouts. This layer stops soil moisture from evaporating into the space and is the most important thing you'll do down here.

  6. Air-seal the rim joist and penetrations

    The rim joist — the outer band of framing on top of the foundation wall — is where most crawl space air leakage happens. Caulk the seams where it meets the sill plate and subfloor, and foam around every pipe, wire and duct that passes through the floor above. This is also where a 2-inch rigid foam block per bay, foamed at the edges, adds real value if the budget allows.

  7. Fit the batts between the joists

    Cut each batt slightly long — half an inch — so it fills the bay without compression. Push it up until it touches the subfloor with no gap above it; a gap lets air circulate and defeats the insulation. Split batts around wires and pipes rather than stuffing them behind. Unfaced batts can go either way; faced batts go paper-up.

  8. Install support wires

    Wedge a support wire under each batt every 12 to 16 inches, bowing it slightly so it presses the batt gently against the subfloor. Don't over-bow — compressing the batt lowers its R-value. Work bay by bay so nothing sags while you move on.

  9. Check your work and close up

    Look for gaps, sagging sections, and any bay you missed behind a duct. Make sure the access door seals well and, if it's in an exterior wall, insulate the back of it. Come back after the first rainy month and check the vapor barrier and batts for any dampness — if there is any, the moisture problem is bigger than it looked.

Frequently asked questions

What R-value do I need for a crawl space floor?

The Department of Energy recommends R-25 to R-30 for floors over unheated spaces in most of the country (climate zones 4–8) and R-13 to R-19 in warm climates (zones 1–3). Joist depth limits you: 2×8 joists hold R-19 to R-25, 2×10 joists R-30. Don't compress a thick batt into a shallow bay — it loses R-value.

Should the paper facing go up or down?

Toward the warm side, which for a floor over a crawl space means up, against the subfloor. Facing down, toward the crawl space, traps moisture inside the insulation. The simplest answer is to buy unfaced batts, which is what most pros use under floors, and let the ground vapor barrier handle moisture control.

How do you hold insulation up in a crawl space?

Insulation support wires — springy steel rods, sold as 'tiger teeth' or 'insulation supports' — wedged between the joists every 12–16 inches, under the batt. They cost about $0.10 each. Don't rely on friction alone; batts sag within a year. Don't use plastic netting over paper-faced batts either, which traps moisture.

Do I need to seal the crawl space vents?

Only if you're insulating the walls instead of the floor, which is a different approach and usually a pro job. If you're insulating the floor with batts, the traditional vented crawl space stays vented. Sealing vents without conditioning or dehumidifying the space causes moisture problems.

What is the best vapor barrier for a crawl space?

6-mil polyethylene is the code minimum and fine for a vented crawl space with floor insulation. For encapsulation, 12–20-mil reinforced liners resist tearing when people crawl on them and are what pros install. Overlap seams 12 inches and tape them; run the barrier up the walls and seal it. Cover every square foot of dirt — gaps defeat it.

Can you put insulation directly on the ground in a crawl space?

No. Insulation on the ground absorbs soil moisture and does nothing for the floor above. The ground gets a vapor barrier; insulation goes between the floor joists or on the walls.
