Hiring a Stump Grinding Service: Per-Inch Pricing and the Quote
A pro grinds a 24-inch stump for $150–$350, typically $240; each extra stump is $30–$60.
- Measure at the soil line including the root flare, count the stumps, and ask for a per-inch rate and the minimum — then get the depth, root chasing and cleanup spelled out.
- Bundle: the first stump pays the trip; each extra is $30–$60. Add the neighbor's stump, or have the tree crew grind on removal day at the add-on price.
- Insurance matters more than credentials: a strike on a gas or water line is the risk, and the company's liability policy is what covers it. Ask who calls 811.
- After: check the depth with a shovel, see that the roots you paid for are gone, and know what's in the hole before you seed.
What you’re buying
Two quotes for “grind the stump in the front yard” at $150 and $300 aren’t comparable until you know whether the $150 is a flush cut with the roots left and the chips in a pile, and the $300 is 8 inches below grade with the surface roots chased, the chips raked, the hole backfilled with topsoil, 811 called and insurance on file. The cost page explains what each line costs; the table below is what to expect.
| Job | Time on site | What should be included | Typical price |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 12-inch stump | 15–30 minutes | Grind to 6–8 in below grade, chips raked into the hole | $100–$200 (minimum) |
| One 24-inch stump | 20–45 minutes | Same, surface roots trimmed at the flare | $150–$350 |
| One 36-inch hardwood with roots | 1–2 hours | Same plus roots chased, hardwood rate | $250–$550 |
| Five stumps, 18-inch average | 1.5–3 hours | First at full price, each extra $30–$60 | $350–$800 |
| Deep grind for replanting or building | Add-on | 12–18 inches | +$50–$200 |
| Chips hauled, topsoil backfill | Add-on | Hole filled and ready to seed | +$50–$150 |
| Grind on tree-removal day | Add-on | Same crew, same visit | +$75–$150 |
The grinder’s checklist
Ask each of these before you book:
- Measurement — diameter at the soil line, including the flare, for each stump.
- Rate — per inch, the minimum, and the price per additional stump.
- Depth — inches below grade, matched to what’s going there next.
- Roots — chased or not, and how far.
- Chips and hole — left, raked in, or hauled; topsoil backfill or not.
- 811 — who calls, and how they handle marked lines.
- Access — machine size versus your gate, slope and the stump’s neighbors.
- Insurance — liability and workers’ comp, certificate from the insurer.
- Suckering species — whether they’ll treat the stump before grinding if it’s a poplar, elm, locust or similar.
When it’s done
Push a shovel into the center of the ground area: it should go 6–8 inches (or the depth you paid for) through loose grindings before hitting anything solid. Look at the surface roots you asked about — gone or trimmed back to where they agreed. If the hole is filled with chips, know that it’ll settle; if it’s topsoil, it’s ready to seed. Keep the invoice; a stump-related claim to a utility or an insurer starts with it.
Estimate a quote before you get one. The stump grinding calculator builds a pro estimate from a low, typical or high base price plus the add-ons above, so you'll know what a fair number looks like.
Frequently asked questions
What should a stump grinding quote include?
The diameter they measured for each stump and where they measured it; the per-inch rate and the minimum; the grinding depth (6–8 inches standard, more if you asked); whether surface roots are chased and how far; what happens to the chips (left, raked into the hole, hauled) and whether topsoil backfill is included; access notes and any surcharge; the price for each additional stump; and that 811 has been or will be called. A one-line 'grind stump $200' is a start, not a quote.
Who grinds stumps?
Tree services, which grind as a line item on removal and as a standalone service; landscape companies with a grinder; and stump-only operators — often one person with a tracked machine on a trailer — who are usually the cheapest for standalone work because the grinder is all they run. For one or two stumps, the stump-only operator; for a removal, the tree crew; for a lot, get both to quote.
Does the tree removal price include the stump?
Almost never; grinding is a separate line, typically $75–$150 as an add-on to a removal because the crew and machine are already there. It's the cheapest stump grinding there is. If a removal quote says 'stump included,' confirm it means grinding below grade, not cutting flush with the ground.
What does the company need to do about utilities?
Call 811 for a locate before grinding below grade, and hand-dig or skip the area near marked lines. Ask who's calling — most companies do it as routine, but a one-person operator may expect you to. Then ask for the certificate of insurance: liability that covers a utility strike and property damage from thrown debris, and workers' comp for the operator. A company without it is a company whose accident becomes your claim.
How deep should I ask them to grind?
6–8 inches for lawn. 12–18 inches if you're planting a tree in the same spot, setting a post, or building a patio, deck or slab over it — and say so in the quote request, because it changes the machine and the price. For a foundation or a driveway, ask about full removal instead; roots decaying under a slab leave voids.
Should I have the chips hauled away?
For a lawn you care about, yes, or do it yourself — grindings left in the hole decompose into a soft dip for a year or two and tie up nitrogen so grass struggles. Hauling and topsoil backfill is $50–$150. The chips are fine mulch for beds and paths if you have somewhere to put a wheelbarrow or two.
What are red flags with stump grinders?
No insurance certificate; 'we don't need to call 811'; a price with no depth or no measurement; cash-only with no invoice; a machine that can't fit through your gate and a plan to grind the stump from the driveway anyway; and a quote far below the others, which usually means a flush cut or a shallow grind. Also anyone who quotes over the phone from your description without asking for the diameter at grade.
Can I get a discount for multiple stumps?
It's the structure of the pricing, not a discount: the first stump carries the trip charge and each additional one is $30–$60 or a per-inch rate without the minimum. Five stumps run about twice the price of one. If the neighbors have stumps, one visit for both properties is cheaper for everyone; ask the company to quote it as one job.
